History 

GoAir was started in the year 2005. The company was launched by Jeh Wadia, the son of Indian industrialist Nusli Wadia. GoAir is a completely owned subsidiary of the Wadia Group. GoAir began its operations with an Airbus A320 aircraft as well as operated its inaugural flight from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on 4 November 2005.

The airline at first operated using one aircraft to 4 destinations like Goa and Coimbatore along with plans to enlist 36 aircraft by the year 2008. In the same year, they also declared revised plans to operate 11 aircraft as well as service new destinations in North East & South India by the end of 2008. However, increasing fuel prices enforced them to reduce the existing number of flights in June 2008.

In the year 2009, British Airways was interested to buy a stake in the airline. In November 2009, they entered into talks with Indian airline SpiceJet.

In April 2012, they also became the 5th largest airline in India in terms of market share after the demise of Kingfisher Airlines.

In the year 2013, the GoAir appointed investment bank JP Morgan to scout for potential investors. Their airline’s development has been slow as compared to various other airlines established at the same time including IndiGo & SpiceJet- they both have larger market share, destinations served and fleet size as of 2016.

According to GoAir, it’s a planned plan due to the hard aviation environment in India as well as to focus on managing profitability instead of catching market share & increasing the fleet size and destinations.

As of February 2016, GoAir remained the 5th-largest carrier in India with an 8 per cent market share. They are further planning for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the year 2020.

The airline took delivery of its 20th aircraft in June 2016, that made it eligible to operate international flights as well.

GoAir also became the 6th Indian domestic carrier to fly international while it started its inaugural flight to Phuket from New Delhi in the year 2018.
