Jockey International, Inc. is one of the American manufacturer, and retailer of underwear, sleepwear and sportswear for men, women, and children.

The company is situated in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Jockey is well-known for inventing the first men’s Y-Front brief in the year 1934. Without any doubt, Jockey is a recognized trademark in over 120 countries.

History 

Jockey was initially named as Coopers Inc. that was found by Samuel T. Cooper in St. Joseph, Michigan in the year 1876 as a hosiery business.

Cooper started the business after learning that lumberjacks were suffering from poorly made wool socks. Late in the year 1900, Cooper started producing undergarments.

Although business was good enough to merit growth in the year 1902, by the year 1934 Coopers Inc. was almost bankrupt because of all the hardships resulted by the Great Depression. Hence, the organization recruited Harry H. Wolf, Sr., in order to restructure their company.

On January 19, 1935, while a blizzard was going on, Coopers Inc. sold the world’s first briefs at the Marshall Field’s State Street store in downtown Chicago. It was designed by an apparel engineer namely, Arthur Kneibler, briefs dispensed with leg sections as well as had a Y-shaped overlapping fly.

The firm dubbed the design the Jockey as it offered a degree of support that had formerly only been available from the jockstrap.

Jockey briefs proved so famous that more than 30,000 pairs were sold within 3 months of their introduction.

Coopers, that renamed as the company Jockey, sent its Mascul-liner plane to make their special deliveries of masculine support briefs to retailers across the United States.

In the year 1938, when macky was introduced in the UK, they sold at the rate of 3,000 a week.

In the year 1997, Jockey achieved the seamless panties division of Formfit-Rogers as well as sold them under the name Form-Fit (this branding was later discontinued).

In the year 1982, Jockey introduced the Jockey For Her line of intimate apparel as well as underwear.
