Zomato is an Indian restaurant aggregator as well as food delivery start-up founded by Pankaj Chaddah and Deepinder Goyal in the year 2008.

Zomato renders information, menus as well as user-reviews of restaurants. Also, they have food delivery options from partner restaurants in select cities.

As of 2019, the service is was available in a total of 24 countries & in more than 10,000 cities.

History 

Zomato was founded with the name- Foodiebay in the year 2008. Further, it was renamed Zomato in the year 2010. In 2011, Zomato multiplied across India to Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata.

Eventually, the company expanded its operations internationally in numerous countries like the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Qatar, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and South Africa in 2012.

In the year 2013, Zomato was also launched in New Zealand, Turkey, Brazil and Indonesia, along with its website as well as apps available in Turkish, Brazilian Portuguese, Indonesian and English languages.

Further, in the year 2014, Zomato began its services in Portugal, after launching in Canada, Lebanon as well as Ireland in the same year.

The acquisition of Seattle-based food portal Urbanspoon also marked the entry of the firm into the United States, Canada and Australia, as well as brought it into direct competition with OpenTable, Yelp, and Zagat. 

With the introduction of .xxx domains in the year 2011, Zomato also started zomato.xxx, that is a site only catering to food porn.

Later, it launched a print version of the website content namely “Citibank Zomato Restaurant Guide” with Citibank in May 2012, however it has been discontinued.

The company focussed to help restaurants with its cloud kitchen to enhance their presence without incurring any fixed cost.

Later in September 2017, the company claimed that Zomato had “turned profitable and successful” in the 24 countries operated in and announced that the “zero commission model” was introduced for all the partner restaurants.

At the end of 2017, the company stopped to accept updates from its active users by not utilising moderators to examine & make updates.
